antique Persian Mahal rug, dating to approximately the early 20th century (circa 1910–1930). The rug features a richly saturated navy blue field centered by a warm rust and salmon-toned diamond medallion, surrounded by an elaborate allover arrangement of scrolling vines, palmettes, stylized florals, and foliage. Cream-colored corner spandrels provide contrast against the deep blue field, while the substantial rust-red main border is decorated with large-scale floral motifs in navy, soft blue, ivory, muted green, salmon, and ochre. The combination of a strong geometric medallion with fluid botanical ornament is characteristic of Mahal weaving and gives the rug a particularly decorative, collected appearance.
